Erna Rosenstein

"Źrodło" (The Source), 1965

Oil on canvas, 146.5 × 117 cm

Zachęta – National Gallery of Art Collection

Erna Rosenstein (1913–2004) studied at the Frauen Akademie in Vienna (1932–1934) and the Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow under Wojciech Weiss (1934–1936). She was associated with the Krakow Group. The largest painting by Rosenstein in the Zachęta collection is *Źrodło* — a cosmogonic depiction that reflects the artist's fascination with the elements. She continued this theme, this time focusing on the element of fire, in another painting in the Zachęta collection, *Spalenie czarownicy* (The Burning of the Witch). Both works were shown at the artist's solo exhibition at Zachęta in 1967. The exhibition was designed by Tadeusz Kantor, who, inspired by the title, placed *Źrodło* on the ground in a black form resembling a well or a crater (the ochre forms in the painting resemble flowing lava).

Rosenstein’s works, which resisted any canonical and conventional norms, reflect her emotions and associations, serving as a record of the creative process. This painting belongs to the avant-garde movement, which was influenced by symbolism, and as such, it evokes the works of Witkacy's *Czysta Forma* (Pure Form), as well as the paintings of Tadeusz Brzozowski and Jerzy Tchórzewski. Critics have pointed out the resemblance of her art to the Secessionist and Young Poland movements, highlighting her extraordinary sensitivity to color (in the discussed painting, there is a surprising combination of red with ochre, pink, and blue). Erna Rosenstein's highly personal and poetic works also belong to the broader realm of surrealism.
