Painting on this cover: "The Woman in the Waves" by Gustave Courbet
Between 1864 and 1868, Courbet created a series of paintings depicting the female nude. He could not have been unaware of the triumph of *The Birth of Venus* by Alexandre Cabanel (Musée d'Orsay, Paris) at the Salon in 1863, along with the popularity of similar depictions by his academic peers. In this work, Courbet references the myth of Venus, the goddess born from the sea, but cleverly subverts the convention by depicting the model’s underarm hair—an element of realism further enhanced by the almost tangible quality of her body.
